How to clean your teeth and gums
Cleaning your teeth and gums – keep it simple!
Plaque accumulates on our teeth and gums after every meal and should be removed as soon as possible. When plaque is left on our teeth for a prolonged period, our gums can bleed due to inflammation and the “acid attack” can cause cavities in our teeth.
When you walk into any chemist or supermarket, the immense number of toothbrushes, toothpastes, mouthwashes, floss and interdental cleaning aids available to you can be overwhelming. Keep it simple.
Follow these steps to have healthy teeth and gums, keep the bad breath and your dental bills at bay!!!
- Twice daily: use a small-headed SOFT bristled toothbrush to gently massage your teeth and gums (electric toothbrushes are great)
- At least once daily: find a suitable interdental cleaning aid: floss and flossettes are excellent for tight spaces but interdental brushes like Piksters or TePe brushes are more effective to remove all food particles from the larger gaps
- If you find flossing difficult, or have dental implants, bridges or braces, then maybe a water flosser might be beneficial to add to your daily oral hygiene habits
- We don’t always recommend using a mouthwash, but if you have difficulty cleaning, using an alcohol-free mouthwash for a short period of time can assist. Of course, any concerns warrant a visit to your trusted dentist in Parramatta
- Don’t forget to use a tongue scraper to clean the top surface of your tongue
- For the little ones: a ‘pea-sized’ amount of toothpaste with a small soft toothbrush head is best, let them brush, have a little fun, make it a family routine. For younger ones, parents and carers may need to help to ensure the baby teeth stay cavity free. Baby teeth are important for keeping the space for the new adult teeth.
The best person to provide you with advice that is tailored to your specific dental needs is your friendly dentist. Our dentists at Parramatta Dental Studio or Cabramatta Dental Studio have over 54 years of combined experience and can make your Dental Check-Ups something to look forward to. A professional check-up and clean once every 6 to 12 months is important to maintain the health of your teeth and gums.
